Overview

Prescription drug abuse is the leading drug problem in the U.S. It cuts across all demographics and affects millions of individuals, families, and care providers everyday. Many states have prescription monitoring programs that allow care providers to obtain prescription drug information on their patients. These systems are very helpful but underused. Increased PMP integration with workflow is a nationally recognized need.

Solution

NARxCHECK tightly integrates with the State’s PMP program and automates the process of obtaining patient specific information. Through the use of an HL7 ADT feed for patient demographic information, no provider input is required to obtain information. A patent pending scoring system was developed to cue a provider’s attention to PMP reports that are likely to contain important information.

Implementation

NARxCHECK was developed with the cooperation of the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy, and in collaboration with hospital and HIE systems. It was installed in its first facility in September 2011. Within two months of the first installation, the program was accepting ADT feeds from six local hospitals with several more scheduled. The system currently delivers over 100,000 scores and reports monthly to providers who have quickly incorporated the tool into their care delivery.
